A Film by Ziv Kanari (Israel, 1999, 25 Minutes, Color, Hebrew, English subtitles)
Since the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, and until the 1967 war, the kibbutzim located in northern Israel, right under the Golan Heights, were subject to constant bombing and sniper shooting by the Syrian soldiers practically on top of them.
The 1967 Six Day War and the Israeli occupation of the Golan Heights marked the end of this period. 35 years later, as mediators and international envoys try to find common grounds for peace talks between Israel and Syria, the people living in these Kibbutzim follow the peace efforts with close attention. For them, a peace agreement between Israel and Syria means that the border and the Syrian soldiers will return to just a short distance from their homes. Some believe it is a price worth paying for peace while others say "never again"!
The movie director Ziv Kanari grew up in Kibbutz Mahannaim, several hundred yards from where the Syrian posts where located. More than thirty years after the 1967 war, he returns to the people and places of his childhood, to see if peace is an acceptable solution for those who spent years under constant threats from above.
