A Film by Moran Zuckerman (Israel, 2003, 54 Minutes, Color, Hebrew, English subtitles)
A provocative and moving film, Men on Wheels offers a rare glimpse into the intimate world of two IDF disabled veterans dancing in the “Hora on Wheels” group. The group combines paraplegics and their healthy, walking women partners. The film uncovers the damaged sexual self-image of the men on wheels and the way Omer & Sammy - the film’s protagonists - overcome it.
Sammy’s intensive occupation with sports is his way of demonstrating his autonomy despite the wheelchair. Sammy snow skis, plays badminton, swims and trains for the upcoming World Wheelchair Dance Championships.
Omer’s married life and his special relationship with his wife, Sima, and their children are revealed while Omer faces another deterioration in his health forcing him to make some crucial decisions…
Interwoven into the intimate life of the two are scenes from the dance group as they rehearse to an approaching dance festival. Sammy travels to Holland to compete in the world championships. Meanwhile, Omer decides to undergo a life threatening operation abroad.
The two friends face the challenges they have undertaken only to prove that despite the wheels, they are men.
