A Film by Nitza Gonen
(Israel, 2002, 53 Minutes, Color, Hebrew, English subtitles)
After losing one of her four children to a terror attack and another to a car accident, Nelly Portuguese feels she has nothing to live for. Hope returns with her decision to open her home to four abandoned children, all with Down syndrome. The film follows Nelly's life after she makes this commitment.
By means of her unqualified love, Nelly contrived to bring the children to achievements as she helped them to grow in every sense, particularly in the domain of music. Their achievements are unique; the four now play music together as a quartet.
She copes with challenge and grapples with difficulties. And despite opposition from her two biological daughters Yael and Yonat, Nelly is making efforts to adopt Yoni, is the most gifted of the foursome and also the only one whose parents have broken off all contact after abandoning him.
We join Nelly in her struggle against the obstacles towering at every turn, on the part of the establishment and her family. Will she succeed?
